Keith , you forgot the part about how we were not in the clear when we found the inlet . Captain krunch found the only sand bar on the outside of the inlet called the monster hole reef , and he decided once we started fishing that it would be o.k. to go ahead and kill the rest of that cooler full of bucsh beer , and he managed to lose steering and we had a man in the bilge turning the rudder by hand , and then managed to go on the wrong side of the jetty rocks in the fog and having to navigate back around finding our way into the inlet and only then hearing someone on the radio telling the captain the coast gaurd would like to talk to him , and now the captain says "I don't have a captains license , I said I used to have a captains license " |

Cancelled Trip
I will start by saying,"If you ever charter a boat, get to the dock, and they tell you your trip is cancelled, just say thanks and go home."
With that being said, we learned that lesson the hard way. Myself and 7 other guys wanted to go for some night snapper fishing in S FL. We charterd a boat on a Saturday night about 30 miles from where we live. We called Saturday afternoon to make sure the trip was still on, we were told "yes", so we loaded up & headed for the boat. Once we arrived we were told the trip had been cancelled. We were all disappointed, but we decided we were going fishing no matter what. (mistake#1) Well, we asked, "What would it take to make the trip happen?" The man said "There's not enough people to cover the expenses, the capt wanted the night off, etc." About that time one more fisherman walked through the door. He had driven from orlando, at least an hour away. (From this point he will be known as Orlando.) Once Orlando showed up we were 9 strong, & he wanted to fish as much as we did. As 9,we went back to the boat owner & asked him, "What will it take to make this trip happen?" He said we would have to make up the difference in dollars for the lack of passengers (problem #1), we agreed to pay up. The owner tried to get a hold of the captain , he got no response, so now we needed a captain. (problem #2) One of the guys spoke up "I have a captains lisence, I will run the boat." (from this point he will be known as Capt Krunch) The owner agreed. (mistake #2)
Once again the fishing was on. We started to load the boat with bait, gear & ice. Because it was a night trip we wanted to have the generator running. We got it going, but did not turn on the cooling system. Luckily, we figured that out before we burnt it up. (no thanks to the mate who reluctantly helped us load the boat, but said if the real captain wasn't going, neither was he) We were finally ready to leave the dock when Capt Krunch yelled " Untie the boat" so we all fell into mate duty & untied the boat (so we thought). There was one line on the outside that no one saw. (mistake #3) We yelled to Capt Krunch
" Lines in" & he dropped the hammer. Next thing you know black smoke rolled & the 3/8" rope that was still tied popped. It sounded like a connon exploding. There was a restaurant beside the boat slip & everyone inside was watching out the window at the 60' head boat taking off like the space shuttle. We were excited though, we were now on our way and making good time, partying on the back of the boat. As we motivated down the ICW, we passed what we thought to be the inlet, but had no worries because we had a captain.
(mistake #4)
Then the boat began to turn right, it hit a sandbar & rolled on its side. Capt Krunch put it in reverse & backed it off . First thought, tragedy averted, but that would only be the first of about 10 groundings, before making it out to the deep water of the inlet. We are finally on our way, by now it is dark , the water is deep, & hitting bottom is not a threat, so we have fishing on our minds. We make it to some nice structure, 15 miles from shore, get anchored and the fishing was on. We caught a cooler full of a variety of snappers.
